Mangaluru: The Marine fishing sector in Karnataka during the lasr decade has the most turbulent. This is due to several issues related to declining catch, imbalnce i economic return bet ween the sectors, high production targetted innovtion in fishing practices, inter sectoral conflicts, the introduction of variousw regulation by different management bodies, and its implimentation and non complience. The Mangalore Research Centre of ICAR CMFRI through its marine fisheries policy for Karnataka has provided advisory to address the issues and sustainable manage marine fisheries of the state. CMFRI's analysis shows there is overcapacity in the fishing fleets in the state. There is an urgent need to reduce the existing fleet sizes to the optimum level in the phased manner, stated scientis t in the management plan for the marine fisherie of Karnataka.
