16 fishermen in two boats rescued off Karnataka coast MANGALURU: A total 16 fishermen were rescued on Saturday after two fishing boats capsized in two separate incidents between Bhatkal and Gangolli in the deep sea, following incessant rain in the coast. The coastal belt, which is receiving heavy rain, resulted in rough seas from the past 2-3 days. Two boats, which ventured into the deep sea for fishing, with eight people in each boat capsized near Bhataka-Gangolli. However, due to the presence of mind of the captains of the boat, all the occupants reached the shore safely, with help of other fishing ships in the area. One of the capsized boats ‘Padmadasa,’ belongs to Santosh S Kundar of Kaup and the other, ‘Shree Shiva Ganesha,’ is owned by Shoba Dinakar from Katpady. According to sources, both the boats had left shore on August 9 from Malpe Fishing Harbour. On Friday, the fishing both boats were hit by giant waves, which damaged the boats and they started sinking. Though the crew from both the boats tried their efforts. Meanwhile, the captain of the ship called for help through wireless communication. Nearby boats identified as Shiva Brahmari, Shivani, Shiva Vallabha and Jai Bajarangi, who received the communication for help, came to their rescue. Though they tried to tow the sinking boats to shore, they failed due to the giant waves hindering their operation. They rescued all the crew members, but the boats capsized. One of the boats sank at 2pm and the other around 4pm on Saturday. The loss has been estimated at Rs1.6 crore.
